DAN BAILEY EARNS EAGLE RANK

Dan Bailey, age 14, Eagle Rank Ceremony, January 14, 1974

Dan, born October 31, 1959, joined Troop 812 in the Baltimore Area Council in 1970 when he was 10 years old. The troop that he really wanted to join was Troop 967, where his older brother was, but they had about 90 scouts at the time, so he signed up on their waiting list.

This is what Dan had to say:

Our summer camp was at a beautiful reservation called Broad Creek, in Harford County, Maryland up near the Pennsylvania border.  I made it into (Troop 967) by May of 1972, and went to my first summer camp that July, and earned my second and first class that week (talk about Shakedown!).  Our sponsor was United Methodist Church in Havre de Grace, Maryland.

We were a very active, camping troop, and we tended to do many of the same trips year after year.  We went to Assateague Island (Maryland and Virginia shore), the C&O canal bike trip, West Point Academy, Canada and the Thousand Islands, and Broad Creek (summer camp) every year.  My old troop still does several of those trips annually, and some of the leaders I knew are STILL involved, even though they may not have grandchildren in the troop anymore.

I had my Eagle board of review on 10/30/73, the day before I turned 14.  My brother, Chip, did not have his board until the next week, even though he is one year older.  I was so proud of that fact!!  We had a joint Court of Honor on January 14, 1974.  My father became our Scoutmaster later that year, and he served in that office for about 4 years.  He continued to serve the troop and the district until his death in 1983.
