Troop 358
Scoutmaster
Jim
Gutman
|
Jim Gutman has
been Troop 358's Scoutmaster since 2002 and has been an
active and involved participant and leader for the last
eight years. As a youngster, Gutman was a Cub Scout, and
while he was never a Boy Scout, he has enjoyed supporting
and cheering on his two sons - Craig, who is 18 and
earned is Eagle in 2001, and Mark, who is 16 and is currently
a Star Scout - through the adventures of Boy Scouting.
When you ask Gutman about the philosophy and
goals of Troop 358, he will proudly tell you that Troop
358 is a boy-run troop, which means the boys are
responsible for planning and running all the activities and
meetings of the troop under the guidance of the adult
leaders.
"We subscribe to the school
of hard knocks where boys learn by making mistakes in a
safe and nurturing environment," says Gutman.
Gutman went on to say that while merit
badges and rank advancement are always encouraged, the main
focus of Troop 358 is developing boys as they mature and
learn responsibility.
"We try to teach these boys to
live the scout law and oath and keep it in their heart
at all times," said Gutman.
Gutman, who has been married to Pam
for 28 years, graduated from the University of New
Mexico (some years back) with a degree in Computer Science.
His career focus is in I.T. and business development.
His hobbies and interests include backpacking, camping,
flying (he has his private pilot's license), sailing,
photography and computers.
Troop 358 meets each Monday at 7 p.m.
at
Shepherd of the
Hills
in Centennial, Colorado.
There are quarterly Court of Honor presentations to
honor and recognize the achievements of Troop 358 scouts.
Additionally, there are monthly outdoor scouting
adventures, an annual organized Boy Scout Camp trip,
and also a High Adventure trip for scouts aged 14 and
above.
